Richard Joseph Gaikowski was born March 14, 1936 in Watertown, Codington County, South Dakota. He moved to San Francisco in the 1960s after serving in the Army in the 1950s as a medic. In 1986, Gaikowski became a possible suspect in the notorious unsolved Zodiac murders that occurred in the San Francisco Bay area from at least December 1968 to October 1969. At that time, Gaikowski was working as an editor for counterculture newspaper called Good Times.

Gaikowski became a suspect after an informant came forward in the 1980s, who had over ten hours of secret recordings of his former colleague. It seemed to this informant, known as Blaine or Goldcatcher, that he knew way too much about the murders.
